"Recommended Car Care Tips That Will Help Save You Money"



 Tire Rotation & Wheel/Tire Balancing:

Tire rotation is a routine maintenance procedure that helps equalize tire wear and preserve your tire's life. Typically, tires should be rotated every 8,000 to 11,000 km's depending on your driving habits, use of your vehicle and the terrain that you drive on daily. Regular tire rotations are particularly important for today's vehicles, since radial tires tend to wear out faster in the shoulder area than the bias tires used years ago. The tire rotation sequence recommended by the vehicle manufacturer can be found in the owner's manual.

In order to maintain ride comfort , minimize tire wear and extend the life of your suspension components, the wheel/tire assemblies should be balanced periodically. Ideally, this service should be performed whenever the tires are rotated. Balancing is a process that enables the technician to pinpoint heavy spots in the wheel/tire assembly  and then make the necessary corrections. There are two types of wheel/tire balancing: "Static" and "Dynamic". "Static" balancing affects the distribution of weight around the circumference of the wheel. This also known as single plane balancing. In contrast, "Dynamic" balancing affects the weight distribution on each side of the wheel/tire centerline, and is therefore referred to as dual plane balancing. When a wheel/tire is statically imbalanced, it causes a condition known as wheel tramp. Wheel tramp causes the tire to move vertically as it rotates due to the centrifugal force acting upon the heaviest portion of the wheel/tire assembly. As a result, the tire develops scattered flat spots around the tread. Wheels that are dynamically out of balance cause what is known as wheel shimmy. This condition is transmitted through the steering wheel more easily then wheel tramp. In fact, most drivers will detect a small degree of "Dynamic" imbalance before they notice a larger amount of "Static" imbalance. Although "Static" balancing does not correct a dynamically imbalanced wheel/tire, "Dynamic" balancing corrects both. This is because the equipment used to perform "Dynamic" balancing determines both the lateral and radial forces on each side of the wheel/tire centerline during the procedure.

Recommendation:

Have your wheels/tires rotated on a regular basis. If you are experiencing vibrations via your steering wheel, chances are it is time to have your tires rotated and balanced by a professional. Keep in mind that when your wheels are properly balanced and the tires are rotated regularly, you contribute to your vehicle wear maturing as it should and you cut down the costs of fuel consumption.




  Wheel Alignment:

In order for a vehicle's suspension system to function as intended, not only must the tires and wheels be in good condition, they must also be properly aligned. This is because the wheel alignment determines the relationship between the tires and the road surface. There are three basic alignment angles. They are caster, camber and toe. "Caster" refers to the forward or rearward tilt of the steering knuckle as viewed from the side of the vehicle. Although "Caster" is not considered a tire wear angle, improper "Caster" will affect steering feel and directional control. "Camber" indicates the tilt of the tire and wheel as viewed from the front of the vehicle. Excessive "Camber" causes wear on the shoulder of the affected tire and it will cause the vehicle to pull to one side. "Toe" refers to the orientation of the wheels in relation to the vehicles centerline. When the wheels are parallel with the centerline, the "Toe" equals zero. Excessive "Toe", either positive (wheels pointed in inward) or negative, (wheels pointed out) will result in rapid tire wear and an off center steering wheel. There are two basic types of wheel alignments depending on vehicle type. A "Front Wheel Alignment" is used for older vehicles with rear wheel drive and a solid rear axle, while a "Four Wheel Alignment" is reserved for vehicles with independent rear suspension.

Recommendation:

If your vehicle is not handling as it is should, ie. pulling to he left or right, you need to book a service appointed and have your tires and tire balance looked at. Remember poor alignment and tires will result in accelerated premature wear on your suspension system and you will ultimately encounter higher fuel consumption costs. More importantly you are putting yourself at risk because the overall handling of your car becomes unsafe. Book a service appointment immediately.
